north star limerence
a tender fleeting moment with the pole star*
i sat and watched the radiance of you, Polaris, yield to the light of day,
fading to my eyes with each passing minute.
i fixed my gaze so fervently,
holding your body with ferocity,
burning your light into my eyes,
holding a grey haze around you
for longer than i had anticipated was possible.
and when pink appeared on the horizon, the Sun behind me,
i lost you in my sights,
and shed a tear from each eye
at the loss of your body
and the effort of holding you—
a small death to be relived
with tomorrow’s dark morning.

*Polaris, as I just learned — our beloved north star navigation point — is not one star, but three that we perceive as a single point of light.
